  • Bryce Barnes, President

    Bryce has been helping to guide and educate people of all ages for many years. In 2010, Bryce and his family moved to Globe, and he began teaching on the neighboring San Carlos Apache Reservation. Throughout the years since then, Bryce has been involved in holistic education and training development in San Carlos as well as with other Indigenous people groups globally.

    Bryce received his B.S. from Arizona Christian University. Early in his career, he worked in youth ministry for several years and then fitness and wellness for a couple years. It was at the Florence Correctional Center and the San Carlos Adult and Juvenile Detention Center that Bryce developed a passion for teaching basic education and developing practical life skills programs for underserved populations.

    Bryce has been married to his beautiful wife for 26 years, and they have five children–two birth children, and three adopted children. His greatest calling in life has been to be a loving husband and father for his wife and kids.

  • Elijah Albert, Vice President

    Elijah Albert is a member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe from Bylas, AZ. He has served on the board of directors since 2020. With a wife and growing family, he has a passion for serving others.

  • Anita Kusmulyana, Treasurer

    Anita brings a unique set of skills, passions, and experiences to the NDC table. Her five years doing accounting for Pricewaterhouse Coopers and the Walt Disney Company converged with her years of mentoring young people and helping to launch a creative arts mentoring group for at-risk teens in South LA when she moved to Globe and joined NDC’s efforts.

    Her work with NDC’s youth summer camp solidified her desire to help create a safe space for children in San Carlos to be themselves. Currently, Anita works as a math teacher at The Schoolhouse Cooperative. She has also taught music at the community college and alternative school in San Carlos. She continues her CPA consulting work for various startups and nonprofits. Anita has a degree in economics from UCLA.

  • Christine Thompson, Secretary

    Hello, my name is Christine Thompson. I am an enrolled member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe. I currently work as the Prescribed Fire and Fuels Specialist for the Natural Resorces Program (Forestry) and I became à member of the board last year. In addition, I volunteered to be the board Secrétary just recently. I am à graduate of Northern Arizona University and have earned my Bachelors Degree in Forestry in 2012. I love the outdoors, boating, running, and like to travel. My whole career, I worked in the field of Forestry for more than 20 years with the Bureau of Indian Affairs and with the US Forest Service in Oregon, California and Arizona. I have worked with the San Carlos Apache Tribe for 10 years and am still employed. I enjoy spending time with family, friends, and relatives. I am à proud supporter of NDC and continue to provide services for the community and happy to be a part of the team.

  • Jessica Doong

    Jessica considers it a privilege and honor to serve on NDC’s board. She has been at times inspired, humbled, and heartbroken by the people and stories she has encountered since she first connected with the San Carlos community at the Poets on the Rez open mic night in 2011. Her kinship with this community has only grown since she began teaching GED and later English and creative writing classes at the community college in 2013.

    In her former life in LA, Jessica got an English degree from UCLA then spent several years mentoring young people, writing for a magazine, and doing marketing for a social media startup. For the past 8 years, Jessica has taught people of all ages. Currently, she teaches language arts at the Schoolhouse Cooperative, which serves students from Globe, Miami, and San Carlos.

    In this place between places, Jessica is learning how to be herself and to love fearlessly. She is finding her true voice and trying to help others do the same. Jessica has had a blast working with kids at NDC’s summer camp and is excited to help NDC, especially its arts and business programs, grow.

  • Marcella James

    Marcella Curley-James is San Carlos Apache and Navajo. Lifelong Arizona resident, born in San Carlos, raised in Superior by her parents Isaac Jim Curley, Sr., and Cecelia Lewis Curley. Marcella was born into K’aitsehit’i’dn clan of San Carlos Apache. Father was from Navajo Nation, Tse níjikíní. Ms. James currently is the academic advisor with Eastern Arizona College-Globe Campus. She has served in several capacities in San Carlos; Campus Facilitator, Eastern Arizona College - San Carlos Campus, Executive Assistant, San Carlos Apache Telecommunications, Bookkeeper, San Carlos Recreation and Wildlife Department. Currently employed with Eastern Arizona College-Globe Campus, Academic Advisor. She brings professional experience in education and business sectors.

  • David Reede

    As a member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe, David has worked for many years to improve the lives of Apache people. From directing tribal programs like the Recreation Department, Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program, Wellness Center, and San Carlos Training Institute to serving as a Gilson Wash Tribal Council member (‘04-‘06) and Tribal Vice Chairman (‘06-’10) to serving on the boards of various health and education organizations, David has been tireless in his pursuit of strengthening the community through promoting the holistic wellness of his people.

    This community leadership experience, his Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Northern Arizona University, his time as Executive Director of the Healthy Native Communities Partnership in Shiprock, NM (‘11-‘12), his intimate knowledge of the needs of the San Carlos community, and his unique connectedness have made his a critical voice into building the foundation of NDC.

    Currently, David is the the Executive Director for the San Carlos Apache Department of Health and Human Services and a board member for various other organizations, including the San Carlos School District, Arizona Advisory Council on Indian Healthcare, AZ Parents Commission on Drug Education & Prevention, and San Carlos Apache Health Care Corporation (former chairman).

Our Staff

  • Eric Shin, Executive Director

    Eric has volunteered at NDC since its inception in 2015. He joined the Board of Directors in 2018 and in January 2020, accepted NDC's first full-time position.

    Eric was born and raised in Chicago, IL where he met his wife, Christine. Both were inspired to move to Globe, AZ in 2010 with dreams to make an impact in their community. Since moving, they were blessed with two amazing daughters, Briana (14) and Isabelle (8), who regularly join dad at work to help with chores.

    Eric studied Information Management Systems at DePaul University and completed his Bachelor's at the University of Phoenix after moving to Globe. Eric has worked in San Carlos for over 13 years and enjoys teaching Boxing and Jiu-Jitsu several nights a week on the Reservation.

  • Chandler Ballinger, Farm Manager

    Chandler has been a part of the Regenerative Agricultural movement for the past six years working at Seven Sons Farms in Roanoke, Indiana. Chandler spent those years in constant study of soil health and the effects of traditional agriculture versus regenerative agriculture on the environment. Throughout his tenure at Seven Sons, Chandler took part in many projects and was exposed to the ins and outs of what it means to be a Regenerative Farmer. He has been a major contributor to managing the warehouse operations team, assisting in creation KPI standards, managing the inventory of 350+ items, and building the systems to run an assembly line. Chandler is proud to partner with nature and its processes and looks forward to the opportunity to learn more about the local environment and how to produce sustainable nutrient dense food for the community in San Carlos.
